Do You Like to Build a Case? Then a Paralegal Career May be Right for You.
Posted Tuesday, Sep 28, 2010 by Allen B. Ury
At its core, the practice of law is all about making a good argument. It’s about acquiring and arranging facts in a way that convinces other people to support your opinion.
In most modern law firms, lawyers don’t actually do this research and organization themselves. They delegate these responsibilities to paralegals (also called legal assistants). Although paralegals can have a variety of responsibilities, perhaps their most important job is to help lawyers prepare for hearings, trials and corporate meetings by carefully putting together and organizing information. This can include:
- Researching the legal databases, CDs and Internet sites to acquire information relevant to their case.
- Identifying laws, judicial decisions and legal articles that cover the subject in question.
- Preparing reports that organize this information and give special weight to laws and opinions that work for and against their position.
- Helping to draft legal arguments, pleadings and motions as directed by attorneys.
If this seems a lot like schoolwork, it is. The same research, organization and writing skills you learn in school are critical to successful paralegal work. If you enjoyed writing school essays and were rewarded with good grades for your results, then a paralegal career may be right for you.
