Canadian University Develops New Tuberculosis Vaccine
A generation ago, it looked like tuberculosis (TB) would become another “conquered” disease like polio, smallpox and diphtheria. But in the last few decades, the disease has developed immunities to many drugs and now ranks as one of the top killers among infectious diseases, second only to HIV. But recently, researchers as McMasters University in Ontario, Canada, announced they had developed a wholly new vaccine to fight the spread of TB. Based on a genetically mutated cold virus, the vaccine is designed to act as a booster to the vaccine that’s been used widely since the 1920s.
‘Cruise Ship Virus’ Vaccine Developed in Cincinnati
And speaking of new vaccines, researchers at the University of Cincinnati say they’ve developed a vaccine against the dreaded norovirus, the bug that causes the so-called stomach flu or “cruise ship virus,” the principle symptoms being 24 hours of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The vaccine is reported to still be in its early testing stages but, if it proves effective, it could reduce cases of his very common and highly contagious disease by more than 50 percent.
University Trains Dogs to Sniff Out Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer, which kills 14,000 American women annually, usually only reveals itself when it’s too late to do anything about it. But it apparently does have a distinct odor, which is why researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are training dogs to sniff out ovarian tumors in their early stages. The researchers goal is to develop an electronic “sniffer” they can use to detect ovarian tumors when the cancer is young and easily removed with surgery.
Too Much Sleep Is Just as Bad as Too Little
Scientists have long known that people who sleep less than six hours every night have an increased risk of developing diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease and other ailments. Now, scientists at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have found that getting too much sleep — defined at 10 hours or more daily — can be just as dangerous. Or even more so. They recommend that everyone get six to nine hours of sleep in any 24-hour period. No less. No more.
No Good Reason Not to Get a Flu Shot
Flu season is almost upon us, and flu shots are being offered at physicians’ offices, pharmacies, grocery stores and at many companies. If you think you don’t need a flu shot, are young and strong enough to avoid the virus, or believe you’ll get sick from it, you’re wrong. Experts say there’s no good reason not to get a flu shot. You need it to protect yourself, the people around you, the people you work with and even the perfect strangers you come into contact with every day. So get one this week. We’ll all be better for it.
