Strong Demand for Electricians in Florida’s Clay County Area

Posted Friday, Dec 13, 2013 by Allen B. Ury

Electrician-1The long-term demand for trained electricians is strong in Florida’s Clay County, just west of Jacksonville. Electrician employment in Clay County will increase 22.4 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO).[1] This is just slight ahead of the 22 percent increase the FDEO projects for Florida as a whole, and about on par with the 23 percent increase projected for the U.S. overall by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).[2]

There are several reasons electricians are expected to be in demand in the years ahead:

1. America’s population is continuing to increase. This is particularly true in Florida, a state that continues to attract many of America’s retirees. An expanding population means more new homes, new commercial construction, and more demand for skilled electrical workers.

2. Economic stagnation. It’s no secret that the U.S. economy has been barely limping along these last few years. And economic forecasters don’t see much chance for a boom any time soon. Wages are stagnant and opportunities for advancement are iffy. So when houses begin to wear out and become dated, more and more families are choosing to remodel and upgrade their current residences rather than packing up and moving to larger, more expensive homes as they may have done in years past. These upgrades often include the installation of new lighting fixtures and kitchen appliances, all of which require the skills of an experienced electrician.

3. The need to improve energy efficiency. Many older homes, office buildings and industrial facilities are being retrofitted with climate control and other systems designed to boost energy efficiency. These systems often require complex electrical installations and even entirely new power distribution systems.
