Massage Therapy Careers

c

Employment of massage therapists is projected to grow 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Continued growth in the demand for massage services will lead to new openings for massage therapists.* Opportunities will, of course, vary considerably at the local level depending on market conditions.

Where can you look for work as a massage therapist? Here are the types of places that often hire massage therapists full- or part-time:

  • Massage studios and day spas -- You've probably seen dozens of massage studios open around town in recent years. They're often found in shopping centers and office complexes. Everest has formal corporate partnerships with two of the largest massage studio franchise chains in America: Massage Envy and Elements Massage. These and other companies regularly look to Everest for new employees.
  • Hotels & Resorts -- Many hotels and resorts have on-site spas that employee professional massage therapists. These spas may be owned by the facility itself or be franchised to an independent operator.
  • Cruise Ships -- Virtually all modern cruise ships have spas, often operated by outside companies. Working on such a ship gives you the opportunity to practice your profession and see the world at the same time!
  • Hospitals -- Many hospitals now have massage therapists on staff to help patients who are undergoing painful physical rehabilitation or cancer therapy.
  • Medical and Rehabilitation Clinics -- Many physical therapists regularly prescribe massage for clients who are recovering from injuries.
  • Sports Organizations -- Professional and semi-professional sports teams often employ massage therapists to help keep their players flexible and pain-free.

You also have the option of opening your own independent massage therapy business. Many massage therapists choose to work independently. They set their own prices and schedules. They offer their services either at home or travel to their clients' homes or places of business to deliver their services.

In short, massage therapy is a field that offers you plenty of options to fit your individual needs and lifestyle.
